A stage musical version of the 1980 film Xanadu is eyeing a spring 2007 off-Broadway berth. Douglas Carter Beane most recently represented in Gotham by the comedy The Little Dog Laughed is penning the libretto.
Xanadu centers on Kira, a Greek muse sent to Earth to inspire mortals. While on this planet, she helps a man build a disco roller rink. The film was written by Richard Christian Danus and Marc Reid Rubel and directed by Robert Greenwald. It starred Olivia Newtown-John as Kira.
The stage Xanadu will utilize songs from the film, which were written by John Farrar and Jeff Lynne. Christopher Ashley is set to direct the project, which is aiming for an out-of-town tryout in the fall.
